But, of course. I remember having a collection of some fifty or so telugu
Amara-chitra katha books. Apart from these, ViSalandhra book house used to
carry 'candamaama' size books, published by the National Book Trust under
'Nehru Children's books' or something like that. These used to carry color
illustrations on every page. However, these were not indigenous to AP, and
are mostly translated from Hindi. Unfortunately, the translators did not
attempt to adopt the story to a Telugu environment, so I used to feel funny
reading those. However, my all time favorites were candamaama and
bommarillu. Later, Bommarillu publishers published some old candamama
serials as pocket books. These included some very fascinating arabian
nights stories. However, they did not have illustrations inside.
Coming to cartoonists, I'd say Mallik and Jayadev are among the best. Their
drawings are neat, humor is usually good, though Mallik sometimes tends to
be vulgar. Mallik's illustrations of his book 'soopar hiT anu dikku maalina
katha' were just hilarious. A few others are satyamoorty, raagati panDari,
oomen (used to draw political satire cartoons in Andhra patrika)_,
Sreedhar(?) of eenaaDu.
