I think celam was the first one who voiced an opinion similar
to yours. Only you are more forgiving than celam was.
celam almost ridiculed it and laughed at those who
liked it! 

But IMHO, it is better to 'preserve' such stuff as 
they tell the generations to come how such biases are
ingrained and show up involuntarily/inadvertently! 

Once you know it was written by a great writer of yesteryears,
you will tend to defend it!

Any effort to play up - as sometimes it happens -
an apology for it merely represents the defender's value-system.
