Tough question IMO! They count each verse as a song. Also VAK did/does that
in his projects. Even then I am finding it hard to reach a figure of 11+ 
thousand songs. I generally count from the number of records. A 
"seesa padyam" (most of the non-film records) can be considered as a 
"full song" as its of ~3 min duration. And 2-3 vRttaalu (e.g. non-film 
"prabhaati" has rEgina mungurul, ii gijigaani gooDu and raagamu nandukonnadi 
- 3 verses. But its on one side of a record and one song for me.) as one 
song. So, we have to check each time what kind of "padyam" it is :-). Safe 
bet is to count each padyam as one song though I personally don't like that.
